Purpose Isn’t What You Do — It’s What Happens Because You Do It
I’ve been writing a lot lately about purpose — searching for it, listening for it, and slowly uncovering what mine truly is. For a long time, I thought purpose was the thing I did: coaching, consulting, building leaders, strengthening cultures.
But I heard something recently that completely reframed everything:
“Purpose is not the thing you do. Purpose is the thing that happens in other people when you do the thing you do.”
That landed in my chest like truth I had known all along but never had words for.
Because if that’s true, then my purpose isn’t to be a leadership coach. My purpose is to help leaders feel better about who they are — so they can lead their teams with confidence, compassion, and clarity. My purpose is the ripple effect.
My purpose is the transformation that happens in other people.
💛 The Moments That Shape Us
When I think about leadership, I don’t think about org charts, KPIs, or job descriptions. I think about moments — the ones that stay with you long after the meeting ends.
I think about the leader who saw potential in me before I saw it in myself. The one who trusted me with the big assignment — the one that scared me and stretched me and ultimately changed me. I think about the handwritten note left on my desk, the one that said, “I see how hard you’re working. Thank you.” It wasn’t fancy. It wasn’t long. But it made me feel valued, seen, and safe.
I think about the leader who pulled me aside and said, “You’re ready for more.” Those words picked me up. They carried me. They built confidence I still draw from today.
Those moments live in me. They shaped me. They helped me rise.
But I also think about the other moments — the ones that left scars.
The leader whose words cut instead of built. The leader who showed up in a way that tore me down, left me crying, questioning my worth, wondering if I belonged. The leader who made me feel small, less-than, invisible.
Those moments stay too. As much as we wish they didn’t, they follow us. They change how we show up. They change how we trust. They change how we lead.
And that’s why leadership matters so deeply — because it reaches into the heart.
🌱 Purpose Lives in the Impact, Not the Title
Simon Sinek says, “Leadership is not about being in charge. It’s about taking care of those in your charge.”
That’s purpose. That’s the work. That’s the calling.
Purpose isn’t found in the tasks, the meetings, or the job description. Purpose is found in the way people feel after they’ve been led by you.
Do they feel valued? Do they feel safe? Do they feel capable? Do they feel seen?
Or do they feel small, afraid, or forgotten?
Leaders leave fingerprints on the hearts of the people they lead — and those fingerprints last.
My purpose is to help leaders leave the kind that heal, strengthen, and elevate.
🔥 Why This Matters for Me — and for You
I believe God wired me to help leaders lead better — not through perfection, but through presence. Through humanity. Through courage. Through compassion.
My purpose is the shift that happens inside a leader when they finally feel confident in who they are. When they stop leading from fear and start leading from wholeness. When they realize their influence is sacred. When they understand that how they make people feel is the legacy they leave behind.
If you’re a leader reading this, maybe you’re in your own season of discovering your purpose. Maybe you’re realizing that your purpose isn’t your title — it’s your impact.
Keep going. Keep listening. Keep leading with heart. Purpose reveals itself in the lives you touch.
